SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Eight different players had a role in at least one victory on Saturday to help the Saint Michael's College women's tennis team down American International College, 6-3, during Northeast-10 Conference play at Central High School. Sophomore Katie Costa (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook Senior) was the lone double winner, while junior Melissa Hickox (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck) won in her college debut.
The Purple Knights, who played for the first time since Sept. 25 and kicked off a regular-season-ending run of five matches in six days, improved to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the league. The Yellow Jackets are 1-11 and 1-10.
The visitors notched a trio of doubles wins to pull ahead for good. In the No. 3 slot, Costa and senior Marissa Landry (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) registered an 8-2 win, with Landry picking up her first victory of the season during the duo's second match together, and senior Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and first-year Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) won by an 8-6 count in the top spot.
Costa nabbed the Purple Knights' fourth point by blanking her opponent in the sixth singles spot, and senior Riley Kruger (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) contributed the clinching point for the third time this season with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Hickox followed by claiming a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the fifth spot during her season debut in her first year of college tennis. Senior Colleen O'Keefe (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), who had never played higher than No. 3 singles, narrowly came up short in her initial career match in the second spot, dropping a pair of 6-4 decisions.
Saint Michael's heads to Le Moyne College tomorrow for a 12 p.m. match.
