WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team fell to Assumption College, 6-3, on Sunday at the Assumption Tennis Courts during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 3-7 overall and in the league, while the Greyhounds improved to 7-2 and 6-1.
Junior Colleen O'Keefe (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and sophomore Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) picked up the Purple Knights' lone point during doubles, capturing an 8-5 decision in the second spot. Saint Michael's was bested by 8-3 counts during the other two contests, with seniors Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) teaming at No. 1 and senior Elizabeth Edwards (Islip, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist Diocesan) and junior Riley Kruger (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) siding at No. 3 in their first match together.
Bundrick won her fifth singles match in the last six tries, edging out a first-set victory before blanking her opponent in the top position by a 7-5, 6-0 final count. O'Keefe rallied for a triumph of her own at No. 3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5. Sulkin dropped a pair of narrow 6-4 sets during a loss in the second spot.
The Purple Knights cap a three-match road swing by hitting the road for the final time this season on Friday, taking on regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University at 3 p.m. The Penmen, who qualified for five of the last six NCAA Tournaments, were seventh in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.
