Women's tennis opens road weekend with loss at regionally-ranked Merrimack

MIDDLETON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened a two-match road weekend with a 9-0 loss against regionally-ranked Merrimack College on Saturday at the Northeast Tennis Center. The Purple Knights slipped to 3-6 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Warriors are 7-3 and 6-3. Merrimack was ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

The Purple and Gold doubles tandem that found the most success was junior Riley Kruger (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and sophomore Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey), who fell just 8-6 in the second position. The duo was pairing for the first time, as Kruger, a first-year member of the team, made her collegiate doubles debut.

Seniors Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) lost 8-3 at No. 1, while senior Elizabeth Edwards (Islip, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist Diocesan) and first-year Melissa Collins (Medford, Mass./Matignon) sided for the first time during a loss in the third spot.

During singles play, Sulkin rallied to tie her match at No. 2 before falling 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Bundrick opposed the 12th-ranked singles player in the region but lost a 6-0, 6-4 decision in the top spot, and Weeks had a close second set during a 6-1, 6-4 defeat at No. 3, marking the first time she had appeared higher than the fifth position as a collegian.

Saint Michael's continues a three-match road trip at Assumption College on Sunday at 12 p.m.
