Women's tennis opens two-match home weekend with loss to heavyweight Stonehill

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened a two-match home weekend with a 7-2 loss to regionally-ranked Stonehill College on Saturday at the SMC Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights slipped to 2-5 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Skyhawks are 5-2 and 4-1. Stonehill, which qualified for six of the past seven NCAA Tournaments, was sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

Senior Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) extended her winning streak to six matches by playing a role in both of her team's points. During doubles play, Bundrick paired with junior Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) to claim an 8-4 victory in the No. 1 position. However, the hosts trailed 2-1 heading into singles.

Bundrick accounted for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in the top spot in singles, but the remaining five Purple Knights all fell in straight sets. Sophomore Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) lost a pair of 6-3 sets at No. 5, while junior Colleen O'Keefe (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also won three games during her second set in the fourth spot.

The Purple Knights complete a three-match homestand against Franklin Pierce University tomorrow at 12 p.m.
