LIVERPOOL, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened a two-match weekend road swing to New York with a 5-3 victory over Le Moyne College on Saturday at Gold's Gym. The Purple Knights improved to 5-3 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Dolphins are 5-6 and 4-4.
Saint Michael's nabbed two of the three doubles matches to carry a 2-1 edge into singles. Juniors Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and first-year Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) earned an 8-2 win in the third spot.
During singles play, senior Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) had the quickest Purple Knight win, by a 6-2, 6-0 count at No. 3, while Kellogg secured a pair of 6-4 set victories at No. 2. Senior Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) collected a 6-0, 6-3 triumph in the fifth slot to clinch the match for Saint Michael's. With the team result decided, Sulkin won a second-set tie-breaker at No. 6 to knot the score, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), before her match was halted.
Saint Michael's heads to The College of Saint Rose tomorrow for an 11 a.m. contest.
