Women's tennis posts second consecutive shutout victory

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team shut out its second opponent in three days on Tuesday, recording a 9-0 victory over Assumption College during Northeast-10 Conference play in the Tarrant Recreation Center. The Purple Knights improved to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds are 5-10 and 4-5.

Saint Michael's took a 3-0 lead into singles play, with junior Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and first-year Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) grabbing the first point with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) held off their foes in the second position, 8-5, before juniors Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) rallied for the Purple Knight sweep. Down 6-5, the duo won the final three games, with Toutoungi serving the final game and Martin's back-hander down the middle clinching the 8-6 victory.

Kellogg swept her opponent at No. 2 singles before junior Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) clinched the team triumph by claiming a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Bundrick rallied from one set down to capture a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1, which included a comeback from down 4-3 in the second set. Martin also notched a win, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, in the third spot after trailing 4-3 in her opening set. Toutoungi posted the eighth point by taking an 8-2 pro-set at No. 6, and Sulkin won 7-5, 6-1 in the fifth spot after trailing 4-3 in her opening set.

The Purple Knights head to regionally-ranked Stonehill College tomorrow for a 3 p.m. match. The Skyhawks, who won last year's NE-10 Championship and have qualified for the past five NCAA Tournaments, are ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.
