Women's tennis begins Spring Break with 5-4 victory over Colorado College

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened its five-match Spring Break trip with a 5-4 victory over Colorado College on Sunday at Lake Cane Tennis Center. The Purple Knights moved to 3-2 this school year, while the Tigers are 1-3.

Saint Michael's won two of three doubles matches to carry a lead heading into singles. Junior Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and first-year Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) teamed for an 8-1 victory in the third position, while junior captains Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) forged an 8-6 triumph at No. 2.

Kellogg notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the second singles position, Martin claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5, and Toutoungi clinched the match for Saint Michael's with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the sixth spot with two other matches still in action. Sophomore Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) won her opening set at No. 3 before sustaining a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-6) loss, and junior Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) rallied from one set down at No. 4 in an eventual 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 loss.

The Purple Knights take on the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in Kissimmee, Fla., opposing a squad ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Division III Central Region poll.
