WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team reached double figures in victories for the 14th time in 15 seasons on Tuesday, knocking off Assumption College, 9-0, during a Northeast-10 Conference match at the Assumption Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights, who are eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll, improved to 10-3 overall and 9-1 in league play, while the Greyhounds are 5-14 and 3-8.
Sophomore Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) and first-year Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) grabbed the largest doubles win, 8-2 in the third spot, en route to a Purple Knight sweep. Senior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and sophomore Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2, and seniors Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) secured an 8-6 triumph in the top position.
In singles action, sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) shut out her foe at No. 4, while Dalton notched a 6-1, 6-2 win in the third spot. Bundrick earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2, Magee won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, and sophomore Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) corralled a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at six. In the fifth position, first-year Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) fought for a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
The Purple Knights return to action in a pivotal NE-10 match on Thursday, hosting Stonehill College at 3 p.m. The two teams are tied for second in the league standings, while the Skyhawks are sixth in the ITA's East Region poll.
