COLCHESTER, Vt. - In its first of two Northeast-10 Conference home matches in fewer than 24 hours, the regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College women's tennis team blanked Le Moyne College, 9-0, on Friday afternoon at the Saint Michael's Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights improved to 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the league, while the Dolphins slipped to 5-8 and 4-6. Saint Michael's is eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.
First-years Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) shut out their opponents in the third position to highlight the Purple Knights' trio of doubles victories. Seniors Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) combined for an 8-4 win at No. 1, and sophomores Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) sided for an 8-6 triumph in the second spot.
Saint Michael's yielded a total of 11 games during singles play, when Magee blanked her No. 1 foe, and sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) dropped just one game at No. 4. Dalton claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at three, and Bundrick earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the second slot. McGrath won a pro set at No. 5, 8-3, and Toutoungi downed her opponent at No. 6, 8-2.
The Purple Knights return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they take on Bentley University. The squads are tied for third in the NE-10 standings.
