ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team received wins by six different players en route to a 5-4 win over Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) College on Wednesday at the Lake Kane Tennis Center. The Purple Knights, who are 2-1 so far on their Spring Break trip, improve to 5-1 after the victory, while the Diplomats fall to 0-2.
Senior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and sophomore Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) topped their doubles opponents 8-3 from the No. 2 slot, while sophomore Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) and first-year Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) won 8-6 from the third position. The pairing of seniors Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) slipped to an 8-5 defeat at the No. 1 doubles slot.
During singles action, Magee notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1, Dalton bested her opponent 6-1, 6-1 from the second slot, and sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) battled to a 6-2, 6-0 win from the third position. First-year Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) fell in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, from the No. 5 spot and Martin dropped a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision at the sixth position. McGrath dropped a narrow 6-4, 6-4 showing at No. 4.
Saint Michael's wraps its four-match Spring Break trip tomorrow when it faces Augustana (S.D.) College for an 8 a.m. match. The Vikings are ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Central Region poll.
