PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) made a run into the quarterfinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship on Sunday, as she and Saint Michael's College women's tennis classmate Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) completed the team's action in the tournament, which was held at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center.
Benoit and Toutoungi competed in the 88-player "B" singles draw, as Benoit went 4-1 during the weekend as one of the final eight standing, and Toutoungi made it as far as the third round.
Sunday consisted of Benoit downing a third-round opponent from Holy Family University, 8-2, and picking up an 8-3 win against a foe from Northeast-10 Conference counterpart Southern New Hampshire University, which has qualified for the past four NCAA Tournaments. In the quarterfinals, Benoit fell by an 8-3 count to a member of the Concordia (N.Y.) College team, which has also competed in the past four NCAA Tournaments.
After earning a first-round bye and picking up a second-round victory on Saturday, Toutoungi's tournament ended with an 8-2 setback in the third round versus a player from Chestnut Hill College who was a semifinalist in the 2011 ITA East Regional Championship's "B" draw and had eliminated another Purple Knight during Saturday's first round.
