COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened its 2012-13 season on Sunday with an 8-1 victory over The College of Saint Rose during a Northeast-10 Conference match on the Saint Michael's Tennis Courts. The Alumni Weekend triumph marked the first match of the school year for both teams.
The Purple Knights yielded only four total games in doubles, winning each match to head into singles leading by a 3-0 count. Sophomores Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) swept their doubles match in the second position before first-years Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) and Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) earned their first college results, combining for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3. In the top spot, seniors Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) led by a slim 3-2 margin before pulling away for an 8-3 victory.
Martin earned her second victory of the day at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, before sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) clinched the match win for the Purple Knights by notching a 6-0, 6-1 win in the third slot. Bundrick won by a 6-1, 6-0 count at No. 2, and McGrath did not lose a game in the fourth spot. Sophomore Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) earned her team's eighth point via a 6-3, 6-0 victory at six before senior Jennifer Crego (West Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) notched Saint Rose's lone point, capturing a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 1 against Magee.
The Purple Knights head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship next Saturday and Sunday at Holy Family University in Philadelphia.
