COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team trailed by just one goal until fewer than 12 minutes remained while concluded its home schedule on Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Southern Connecticut State University at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 1-14-1 overall and 0-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls improved to 6-8-1 and 6-6-1.
Senior Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made four saves as one of 11 seniors present for their final college home game for Saint Michael's. Junior Caroline Staudle scored twice for Southern Connecticut State, sophomore Victoria Conde had a goal and an assist, and junior Erica Ridella recorded five stops.
Senior Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) had a pair of early bids for the Purple Knights, but Ridella denied her fourth-minute, on-the-run try before stopping Brady's shot from 25 yards away in the following minute. Junior Christine Allard got behind the Saint Michael's defense during the 17th minute but headed an entry pass high from close range.
Staudle put the Owls on the board a few minutes later, with Conde sending a through ball and Staudle carrying through the center of the field while being flanked by a defender and finishing to the lower left at 19:55. In the 28th minute, junior Maeghan Howard had her free kick blocked by the Purple Knight wall, and the rebound caromed back to her feet before she pushed a follow-up attempt on net to Sullivan. Sullivan made another stop in the 42nd minute, turning away senior Kayla Orozco's long bid, to keep it a one-goal game at the intermission.
Brady nearly knotted the game in the 53rd minute, one-touching senior Amanda Shanahan's (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) cross toward the right post, where Ridella dove to make a stop. Orozco one-touched a pass over the crossbar from point-blank range while running into the box in the 57th minute, and Saint Michael's again had a tying bid denied in the 68th minute, as senior Cassie Chernicki's (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) try from 25 yards was saved by a diving Ridella at the left post.
Southern Connecticut State pulled away with two goals in an 8:13 span over the final 11:28. Howard's corner kick in the 79th minute found Staudle in the middle of the box to give the visitors breathing room. In the 87th minute, sophomore Brooke Davis carried through the center of the field before passing to the left wing for Conde, who picked the right side of the net at 86:45.
The Purple Knights conclude their season on Saturday at Franklin Pierce University at 5 p.m.
