COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team held defending Northeast-10 Conference regular-season champion and 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier Assumption College scoreless until the 52nd minute of an eventual 3-0 setback on Wednesday at Duffy Field. In their first game in eight days, the Purple Knights slipped to 1-10-1 overall and remained winless in nine NE-10 games, while the Greyhounds are 8-4 and 6-4.
First-year Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made eight stops for the Purple and Gold, coming within one of her career high. Sophomore Amanda Arnold had two goals and an assist for Assumption, senior Paige Radomski also scored, and junior Emily Kuzma made six saves.
Saint Michael's rattled off a 9-5 advantage in first-half shots. Senior Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) slid on the right side of the box to send a soft shot toward the right post that Kuzma stopped in the 20th minute, and LeCours followed in the 29th minute by sliding through the box and intercepting an Assumption cross. Just seconds later, junior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) lofted the ball from 25 yards out, but Kuzma caught it at the crossbar.
In the 35th minute, Brady and senior Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) worked a 2-on-1 rush in the Greyhound end of the field, and Chernicki slipped a quick centering pass that Brady chipped over the rushing goalkeeper, but the ball hit the right post, and Kuzma covered the rebound.
LeCours stopped Radomski in the 50th minute to keep the game scoreless, but Arnold followed with a pair of tallies 9:03 apart to put her team in control. First she settled a failed clear at the top of the box, turned and fired the ball off the left post and in at 51:05 for the game-winner. On the next shot of the game, Arnold and first-year Jessica FitzGerald connected on a give-and-go, with Arnold one-touching home FitzGerald's cross at 60:08.
In the 74th minute, Horne crossed a free kick toward the right post, where senior back Marianna Nowacki (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) rose in a crowd to head the ball wide while bidding to halve the deficit. In the waning minutes, Arnold sent an 86th-minute through ball into the center of the box for Radomski, who one-touched the ball while on the run past a rushing LeCours for an insurance tally at 85:36.
Saint Michael's hosts Le Moyne on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Purple Knights will honor their 11 seniors prior to the contest.
