COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team surrendered the game's lone goal during the 28th minute of a 1-0 loss against Stonehill College at Duffy Field on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights move to 1-8-1 overall and 0-7 in the league, while the Skyhawks are 3-5-2 and 2-3-1. The teams previously played to a scoreless draw on Sept. 4 during their season openers.
Saint Michael's first-year goalkeeper Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made four saves. Stonehill junior Andrea Mancuso tallied a goal with an assist from sophomore Taylor Shannahan. Junior Jamie Block recorded a three-save shutout.
Both squads combined for just two shots on target in the opening 27 minutes. Saint Michael's senior Sabrina Marasco (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Raton Community) sent a header over the net at 21:39, followed up 30 seconds later with an open shot that sailed wide right. Classmate Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) had her point-blank shot denied by Block at 4:27 before Stonehill sophomore Lindsay Gomes saw her bid at 10:16 rejected by Purple Knight senior Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional), who was parked on the goal line. The Skyhawks broke through at 27:43 when Shannahan's through ball connected with Mancuso, who darted up the center of the field before firing a strike to the middle of the net. The hosts had their best chance of the half when junior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) fired a line drive shot that forced Block to make a diving save to her right.
Stonehill was kept at bay in the second stanza, despite owning a 6-3 shot advantage. LeCours turned away a pair of Mancuso bids in the 50th and 70th minutes before making a fingertip save on junior Claire O'Brien's long-range strike at 87:23. LeCours denied senior Meagan Elliot with 55 2seconds to go for her final stop of the day. Saint Michael's sophomore Abby Pelon (South Lyon, Mich./Ladywood) registered the hosts' only shot on net of the half when she fired a mid-range bid at 69:23 that was gobbled up by Block.
Saint Michael's travels to American International College for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
