Women's soccer lands on losing end of back-and-forth battle with Pace, 3-2

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team yielded the winning goal with 10:33 left to play in a 3-2 loss to Pace University on Saturday at Duffy Field during Northeast-10 Conference action. The Purple Knights fall to 1-6-1 overall and 0-5 in the league, while the Setters move to 4-3-1 and 2-2-1.

Junior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) converted on two penalty kicks and senior goalkeeper Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made four saves for Saint Michael's.

Pace sophomore Drew Ribadeneyra registered one goal and one assist, with classmate Emma Sinanan and first-year Ariana Bresa both scoring as well. Sophomore Aisha Chauhan turned in four saves for the win.

Saint Michael's grabbed a 1-0 lead at 22:35 when Horne converted on a penalty kick opportunity. Horne took the kick after senior Amanda Shanahan (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) was tripped up at the top right corner of the box by a Setter defender. Pace looked to even the score at 27:16 following a rebound off of Sullivan, but Purple Knight senior Marianna Nowacki (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) was parked on the goal line and denied the second-chance bid by junior Delany Williams. Following a free kick by Ribadeneyra, Bresa booted the ball off the crossbar, but collected the rebound and buried the equalizer at 39:19.

At 48:13 of the second half, the Purple Knight defense turned in another team save, this time snuffing out a shot by Sinanan. Eight seconds later, Ribadeneyra sent in a corner that was headed off the crossbar by Sinanan. Chauhan then stopped a trio of Purple Knight shots at 50:36, including a point-blank stop on senior Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont).

The hosts retook the lead, though, when Horne deposited another penalty kick at 54:34, following a foul on Pace when a Setter defender brought down Brady at the top of the box. Pace later knotted up the score when Ribadeneyra sent a cross low into the box that found Sinanan, who headed in the ball to the middle of the net at 70:54. The Setters grabbed back the lead for good at 79:27 after Ribadeneyra was successful on her penalty kick. Saint Michael's gave a final charge with 2:43 remaining as senior Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) fired a right side shot that just whistled past Chauhan's fingers before going to the left of the post.

The Purple Knights will head down to Saint Anselm College on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
