COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team fell shy of nationally-ranked The College of Saint Rose by a 4-1 count on Wednesday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights are 4-0-1 and 2-0. Saint Rose, which has advanced to six of the past seven NCAA Tournament Final Fours, is ranked ninth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll.
Senior Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) scored the lone Saint Michael's goal. Classmate Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) stopped three shots in the opening 74:27 before first-year Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made two saves in 15:33 of relief.
Senior Jennifer Busk scored twice for Saint Rose, while sophomore Morgan Burchhardt registered one goal and one assist. Junior Kristen Carr tallied a goal and first-year goalkeeper Madison Taylor collected two saves for the win.
Saint Rose netted the opening goal at 2:30 when Busk picked up her own rebound off of the right post and booted home the ball to the left side. Just 1:57 later, Busk crossed a pass into the box to find Burchhardt, whose header rang off the crossbar. The Golden Knights threatened again as Busk's corner kick at 12:25 found senior Amanda Vasquez, whose header was stopped by Purple Knight senior back Bridget Conway (Bethel, Conn./Bethel), with the second-chance opportunity by Saint Rose sophomore Roxana Hernandez going off the crossbar. Later in the half at 37:22, Saint Michael's junior Agi Chretien (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) blocked senior Silvana Giovannone's open-net shot, while Purple Knight junior Allegra DiCesare (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) made a goal-line stop on senior Michaela Phillips just 32 seconds later to keep Saint Rose at 1-0 margin on 12 shots in the first half.
Saint Michael's drew even at 51:45 as senior Amanda Shanahan (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) made a midfield pass to open space for Brady, who outran the Golden Knight defense before chipping the ball over Taylor for the equalizer. The tie lasted just 3:56 as Busk beat a charging Sullivan following a failed Purple Knight defensive clear. Carr scored 2:40 later after receiving a short end-line pass from Burchhardt as Saint Rose went on top, 3-1. Burchhardt tallied a goal of her own by sending in a strike from the left side at 65:04 for the Golden Knights' final score. Saint Michael's senior Sabrina Marasco's (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Raton Community) loft at 75:54 sailed just over the crossbar as the hosts were unable to get a shot on target during the remainder of the contest.
The Purple Knights hit the road to play regionally-ranked Adelphi University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Adelphi is eighth in this week's NSCAA East Region poll.
