EASTON, Mass. - While making its first championship game appearance during the third annual Catholic Cup, the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team lost to defending Northeast-10 Conference regular-season champion Assumption College, 5-1, on Saturday at Stonehill College's Skyhawk Field. The Purple Knights are 0-1-1 on the season, while the Greyhounds, who also qualified for the 2014 NCAA Tournament, improve to 2-0.
First-year Sarah Williams (Bronx, N.Y./The Ursuline School) netted the first goal of her college career, with an assist from classmate Riley Mitiguy (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial). Senior Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) posted six saves. Williams, senior Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) and junior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) were all named to the all-tournament team.
Senior Katie Bealka, junior Nikki Callini, sophomore Amanda Arnold, and first-years Ania Spina and Kallie Villemaire all scored for Assumption, and junior Emily Kuzma recorded five saves.
Brady had a pair of strikes turned away by Kuzma a little more than three minutes apart during the opening 14 minutes of the game, but Assumption broke through with a pair of goals 6:17 apart during the latter portion of the stanza. After a Greyhound corner kick trickled through the box, Bealka caught up with the loose ball and potted the go-ahead marker at 26:37. Shortly after Brady was denied again by Kuzma during the 33rd minute, Villemaire countered 32:54 into the contest by lofting a shot from outside the box over Sullivan.
Sullivan kept the Purple Knights within striking distance with a trio of stops in the first 16:19 of the second stanza. Horne's bid to halve the deficit was later rejected by Kuzma midway through the 69th minute, and Sullivan turned in her fourth save of the period later in the minute. However, senior Paige Radomski fed Callini less than a minute later, and Callini sent another shot from outside the box above the defense at 69:27.
Saint Michael's cracked the scoring column at 76:41, as Mitiguy sent a cross from the edge of the box to the head of Williams, who redirected the ball into the left corner. Assumption quickly regrouped, with Spina sending a corner kick into the net at 80:57 before Arnold scored from 20 yards with 23 seconds remaining.
