MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team fell at Saint Anselm College, 20-10, on Tuesday in Grappone Stadium. The Purple Knights are 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks improved to 4-2 and 2-0.
Seniors Ashley Dineen (Somers, N.Y./Canterbury School) and Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) both had two goals and an assist for the Purple and Gold, with Moyna pushing her career point total to 107 and leapfrogging Crystal King '14 (105) for 15th in program history. Junior Kate Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) scored twice and controlled three draws, first-year Olivia Krause (Bow, N.H./Bow) tallied two goals, while junior Alex Vincent (Rush, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women) and sophomore Kaelyn Oliver (Canton, Conn./Canton) netted one each.
First-year Emma Coleman (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers, while junior Annie Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) scooped four ground balls and had three draw controls and three caused turnovers, taking over sole possession of fifth in school history with 52 caused turnovers. Senior Susie Ellicks (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) notched three ground balls and caused her 36th career turnover, moving into a four-way tie for 15th in program history. First-years Alexis Bower (Elmira, N.Y./Horseheads) and Victoria Putnam (East Falmouth, Mass./Saint Mark's School) both made four saves, with Bower suffering the loss after working the first 22:48 of action.
Senior Meaghan Sheehy led Saint Anselm with seven goals and one assist, while classmate Erica Mattila had five goals and seven draw controls. Senior Zoie Cavotta nabbed the win after making five first-half saves, and sophomore Bailee Pudvar registered five more in the second stanza.
Sheehy scored the game's first three goals by 24:43 of the opening half before Mattila made it 4-0 at 23:02, and Mattila's marker with 15:42 left pushed the lead to 7-1. The Purple Knights countered with four of the next five goals, as Moyna and Oliver scored at 13:33 and 11:11, respectively, before Dineen and Kate Martin tallied two minutes apart to make it 8-5 with 5:12 remaining. However, Sheehy and senior Madison Shea both potted free-position markers within the following 1:48, giving the hosts a five-goal halftime lead.
Moyna and Dineen both scored in the opening 1:55 of the second period, but Saint Anselm netted five of the next six goals to pull ahead 15-8. Kate Martin struck with 8:33 to go and Krause tallied her second goal 56 seconds after that, bringing Saint Michael's within 15-10, but Sheehy's two goals led a game-ending 5-0 surge.
The Purple Knights rest until hosting Merrimack College next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors are 21st in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.
