COLCHESTER, Vt. - The top four point leaders return to the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team in 2019-20, as the squad returns 18 veterans for Chris Donovan's 20th year as head coach. The Purple Knights kick off their season on Oct. 18.
Junior Maddie Gervais (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) recorded four goals and 10 assists as the point leader for the Purple Knights last year. Just behind her in points was senior Jordan Monbouquette (Wayland, Mass./Lawrence Academy), who led the Purple Knights in goals with nine. Monbouquette was tied in points (13) with classmate Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy), who accounted for six goals and seven assists as a defender. Junior Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) and sophomore Jenna Harrison (Kitchener, Ontario/Wellesley) both recorded nine points last year.
Senior goalie Vika Simons (Essex Junction, Vt./Minnesota Duluth Club) split time as the starter last year and turned in a .912 save percentage in her first year with the program. Junior defender Courtney Kelly (Arlington, Mass./Boston Jr. Shamrocks) had three goals and nine assists, while senior defenders Torrie Gray (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and Alissa Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) are the two captains for the 2019-20 team.
Saint Michael's will open the season with eight straight New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) games. The first will be on the road at Post University for a two-game weekend series on Oct. 18-19. The Purple Knights won four meetings against Post last year with the final meeting being a NEWHA Tournament first-round win. After the eight straight conference games, the Purple Knights go on a run of eight straight non-conference games. Saint Michael's finishes its regular season with 12 of its final 13 games in league.
This will be the first year in which the NEWHA has been an active NCAA Division I member. The conference is comprised of NCAA Division I institutions Long Island University and Sacred Heart University and four NCAA Division II Institutions: Post, Saint Michael's, Franklin Pierce University, and Saint Anselm College.
The NEWHA released its preseason coaches' poll on Thursday, when the Purple Knights were ticketed for fifth place out of six schools with eight points following a season in which they went 7-17-1 overall and 4-11-1 in conference. One of the Purple Knights' wins came against Franklin Pierce, which is third in the poll with 15 points. The Purple Knights also picked up a tie against Sacred Heart, which is second in the poll with 21 points and one first-place vote. Defending NEWHA champion Saint Anselm tops the poll with 25 points and five first-place votes.
