COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey junior Vika Simons (Essex Junction, Vt./Minnesota Duluth Club) was named New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 10. It was Simons' fifth accolade this winter, and her third major award.
Senior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep), junior Jordan Monbouquette (Wayland, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and sophomore Riley Nichols (Gilford, N.H./Tilton School) all landed positions on the NEWHA Weekly Honor Roll. Talcott was recognized for the fourth time this year and Monbouquette for the third, while Nichols claimed the initial weekly nod of her career.
Simons made 56 saves while shutting out Post University, 5-0, on Saturday. She made 27 in the third period alone while recording the second-most saves in a shutout in NCAA Division I/II this winter. Simons helped the Purple Knights hold the Eagles to an 0-for-5 showing on power plays. During her first season of NCAA ice hockey, Simons has a .914 save percentage and a 3.65 goals-against average with two shutouts in 12 games, including 11 starts. She is sixth in NCAA Division I/II with 35.5 saves per game.
Talcott recorded a 29-save shutout of Post in a 2-0 victory on Friday. She turns in career bests with a .918 save percentage and a 2.91 GAA while averaging 32.2 saves. Despite being a regular in the starting lineup during only the past two seasons, Talcott is tied for sixth in program history in career wins while standing eighth in saves (1,150).
Monbouquette scored twice and was plus-4 during the 2-0 weekend. In Friday's 2-0 victory, she netted both goals during the first period while finishing plus-2. She added another plus-2 performance on Saturday. Monbouquette has nine goals and three assists in 21 games after totaling eight points as an underclassman. She is tied for fifth in the NEWHA in game-winning goals (3) and tied for 13th in tallies. Her three game-winners match a program record.
Nichols scored twice, including potting a game-winning goal, while also assisting a winner and going plus-4 with two blocks during the 2-0 weekend against Post. She lent an assist on the winning goal 2:32 into Friday's victory while going plus-2 before scoring twice with two blocks and a plus-2 rating on Saturday, when she scored the first and third goals of the game. Nichols has two goals and four assists this season after totaling one point as a rookie.
With the sweep of the Eagles, the Purple Knights clinched the fourth seed in the NEWHA Tournament and host No. 5 Post on Feb. 19 for a first-round game. At 6-14-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the league, Saint Michael's caps its regular season with a two-game weekend series at Sacred Heart University, with Friday's opener beginning at 4 p.m.
