Seven Purple Knights Nab Wins, Swimming & Diving Teams Swept by Clarkson

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Seven members of the Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams picked up individual victories as the Purple Knights closed their first-semester dual-meet slate with losses to Clarkson University on Saturday in the Ross Sports Center natatorium. The Golden Knights swept with 144-82 and 140-92 wins in the men's and women's meets, respectively.

THE ACTION

  • Giampietro won the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.15) while placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke and anchoring the runner-up 200-yard medley relay. Senior Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) and first-years Bella Amedio (Schenectady, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) and Marisa Butzirus (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) sided with her during the relay.
  • Geschwind won the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.98) and placed third during the 200 IM.
  • King topped one one-meter diving event (107.95) by 5.65 points while claiming second place during the second. Sophomore Tess Brown (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) was third in the second event.
  • While claimed second in the 100-yard butterfly, besting the third-place finisher by 0.08 seconds, and Butzirus was second in the 100-yard backstroke. Amedio nabbed third in the 50 free and 100 breast races.
  • Butzirus, White, senior Katie Valle (Weston, Mass./Weston) and first-year Emma Jane Tagliaferro (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) were second in the 200 free relay, with Tagliaferro also second in the 200 free.
  • Senior Reiley Adelson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was second in the 1,000 free and third during the 100 free, while classmate Sarah Brennan (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) took third in the former. Junior Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) placed third in the 100 back.

THE ACTION

  • Hopkins, McGurn, Mulderrig and Stewart all swam for the runner-up 200 medley relay while each winning a solo race. Hopkins won the 50 free (22.07) while taking second in the 100 back, and Stewart topped the 200 free (1:55.77) in addition to placing second during the 100 free by 0.05 seconds over the next finisher.
  • Mulderrig topped the 100 fly (56.71) and touched the wall second during the 200 IM, followed by junior Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) in third. McGurn won the 500 free (5:14.03) and placed third in the 100 breast.
  • Sophomore Nate Imbergamo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) took second in both the 500 and 1,000 free races, while first-year Dennis Sullivan (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) was runner-up in both one-meter dives. Imbergamo edged out the third-place finisher in the 500 free by 0.30 seconds.
  • Fortier and Imbergamo combined with first-years Peter Middleton (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Nolan Speidel (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) to finish third in the 200 free relay.
