Kohn Sets Two Records, Giampietro Adds Another as NE10 Championship Concludes

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) broke two of her own school records, sophomore Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) set another mark en route to winning the 200-yard breaststroke consolation final, and the Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving squads completed their seasons as the four-day Northeast-10 Conference Championship concluded on Sunday at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center.

Purple Knights combined to set 11 school records during the meet, with Kohn playing a hand in four and Giampietro three. Sophomore Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) had a role in four of the men's team's marks. The Saint Michael's women finished eighth among 10 schools, beating out two squads for the fourth consecutive year, while totaling 245 points, second only to last year's team (266) since the NE10 added its eighth program in 2009-10. The men took seventh out of seven at 218.5, notching their best total in three years and second-best since the 2009-10 season. Southern Connecticut State University won both championships on Sunday.

Kohn took 10th in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 18:12.25, dropping 16.87 seconds from her seed time to fell her own year-old record by 10.05 ticks. She completed the opening 1,000-yard portion of the race in 11:00.43, which was good for another mark, besting the one she set two years ago by 6.87 seconds. Giampietro clocked in at 2:28.91 during the morning 200 breast race, lowering Julie Mullowney's '14 four-year-old school standard by 1.17 seconds. In the evening B final, Giampietro touched the wall at 2:30.02, placing her first in the heat as well as ninth overall.

Kohn led off for the ninth-place 400 free relay quartet (3:46.75), joining senior Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), sophomore Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) and first-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford). The B squad was 18th, with seniors Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) and juniors Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) siding.

Hopkins had the best finish for the men, placing sixth in the 100 free (47.04) to move up one slot over his trials finish and come within 0.31 seconds of third place. Senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) was ninth in the 1,650 free (17:03.44), and two Purple Knights apiece qualified for two different consolation finals. Sophomore Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) tied for 12th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.35), followed by first-year Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) in 16th (2:09.68). During the 200 breast, senior Michael May (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) nabbed 15th (2:26.56) while junior Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) captured 16th (2:46.59).

Hopkins, Mulderrig, Ralston and first-year Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) joined to take sixth in the 400 free relay (3:18.01), coming within 0.16 seconds of a three-month-old school record. Fortier, May, Sutton and junior Brandon Bielinski (Windham, N.H./Windham) combined for a 15th-place finish.
