CHARLEMONT, Mass./WOODFORD, Vt. - Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) registered his third straight fourth-place finish on Saturday to highlight the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams taking eighth among 16 schools during the Williams College Carnival. With 368 points, the Purple Knights edged Saint Lawrence University (345). Dartmouth College won with 990 points. Saturday's Alpine races occurred at Berkshire East, while the weekend's Nordic events were at Prospect Mountain.
The Saint Michael's men's Alpine squad took third in Saturday's slalom with 88 points, besting Middlebury College by two points while trailing only Dartmouth and the University of Vermont. For the carnival, the men's Alpine team was fourth with 166 points, just eight shy of Dartmouth while trimming the University of New Hampshire by one. Between men's and women's events, Alpine took fifth to come within 39 points of Middlebury.
Grand took fourth in the slalom with a two-run time of 1:53.52, while senior Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) tied for 16th in 1:55.39. Sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) was 24th at 1:56.82. On the women's side, junior Clara Lopez Costa (Barcelona, Spain/Green Mountain Valley School) placed 28th at 2:13.99, while sophomore Megan Dingman (Park City, Utah/Rowland Hall) was 30th in 2:15.82. Classmate Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Perbråten VGS) was 36th in 2:17.27.
First-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) was only one second outside the top 30 during the women's 3.8K freestyle, claiming 31st place in 10:08.7. Senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) claimed 58th in 10:50.9, and sophomore Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) crossed the finish line 62nd in 11:13.5. Sophomore Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) led the men in the 3.8K freestyle in 55th at 9:25.2, while classmate Ethan Brookner (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) took 60th in 9:38.2. First-year Sam Seeley (Center Harbor, N.H./Inter-Lakes) rounded out his team's top three in 62nd.
The Purple Knights complete the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) season next Friday and Saturday at the Middlebury College Carnival, which is also the EISA Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship.
