2017 Alpine skiing outlook

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A school-record three competitors qualified for the NCAA Championship last winter, and each returns to a deep Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing team this season. Nine first-years join a 24-person roster that counts only three seniors, as the Purple Knights seek representation at an NCAA Championship for the eighth time in nine years while building upon the first All-America finish ever by a Saint Michael's skier.

Head Coach:
Gus MacLeod '02 (7th Year)
Assistant Coaches: Jamie Bender '17 (1st Year), Nick Stagers (5th Year)

2016 NCAA Championship:
15th/21 | 11th/21 (men's Alpine) | 14th/21 (women's Alpine)
2016 EISA Championship: 9th/16 (combined with Nordic) | 6th/15 (men's Alpine) | 10th/15 (women's Alpine)

First-Years: 9

Skiers who led team in 23 of 24 events during 2016 regular season return, as do those who occupied 39 of team's 49 scoring positions ... each of team's school-record three NCAA Championship qualifiers returns; a fourth returner narrowly missed qualifying ... those three single-handedly combined for a 15th-place team finish out of 21 schools at NCAAs, the second-best placement in College history, behind a program-record 50 points ... team's 24 skiers represent 10 U.S. states and three countries ... six international students is believed to be a school record ... team has two sets of siblings ... Alpine squad has sent at least one skier to NCAA Championship seven of last eight years.

Saint Michael's opens the season at the Saint Lawrence University and University of New Hampshire carnivals on Jan. 20-21 and 27-28, respectively ... two of the first three February carnivals are within 75 minutes of campus, for events hosted by the University of Vermont (in Stowe) and Middlebury College, while the middle meet is the Dartmouth College Carnival ... the regular season ends with the Purple Knights' longest trek of the year, at the Bates College Carnival on Feb. 24-25. That competition will also be the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship ... with the NCAA Championship in the East Region this season, qualifiers head back to New Hampshire for a meet hosted by UNH on March 8-11.
