JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt./HUNTINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams concluded their first Saint Michael's Carnival since 2010 with their best performance in six seasons on Saturday, finishing ninth among 15 institutions with 281 points and edging Harvard University by nine. The University of Vermont won the competition with 883 points. Alpine events took place at Smugglers' Notch Resort, while Nordic races occurred at Sleepy Hollow Inn, Ski and Bike Center.
The men's Alpine contingent placed sixth out of 13 squads during the slalom, with junior Kevin Krone's (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) career-best 12th-place finish leading the way. Between two treks down the mountain, Krone clocked in at 1:44.53. Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) tied for 16th in 1:44.99, and senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 39th at 2:05.23, improving nine spots following his first run of the day.
Junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) led the women in the slalom, taking 34th in 2:00.76 while improving 2.52 seconds during her second run. First-year Molly Van Deursen (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) was 37th at 2:05.00, trimming 1.64 seconds for her second run, and sophomore Abigail Hotaling (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) nabbed 43rd at 2:13.20.
During the Nordic portion of the carnival, only the mixed-gender 4x3K freestyle relay was contested on Saturday. Seniors Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional), junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) and sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) combined for the Purple Knights' best showing, taking 28th in a cumulative 43:45.6. Senior Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North), sophomores Catie Corrigan (Canajoharie, N.Y./Canajoharie Central School) and Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans), and first-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) sided to nab 29th, clocking in at 45:29.9.
The next event on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) calendar is next weekend's Dartmouth College Carnival, which begins on Friday at 9 a.m.
