NEWRY, Maine/RUMFORD, Maine - Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) placed 12th among collegians in the giant slalom during the season-opening Bates College Carnival on Friday. After the first day of the two-day competition, the Purple Knight Alpine and Nordic skiing squads stand a combined 10th among 16 institutions, with 96 points.
The carnival, whose Alpine races are being run at Sunday River and whose Nordic events take place at Black Mountain, concludes on Saturday, with the men's slalom opening the day at 9:15 a.m.
Farrell took 12th out of 42 collegians - and 15th overall - during the giant slalom in a two-run time of 2:13.27, as he trimmed 3.11 seconds off of his first trek down the mountain during his second descent. Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 33rd at 2:16.39, shaving 2.45 seconds, while junior Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) placed 37th in 2:17.13, cutting 3.27 ticks.
Four of the six Saint Michael's women who left the Alpine skiing starting gate on Friday were making their first college appearances. First-year Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) placed 31st among collegians with a two-run combined time of 2:20.95, moving up four spots after her opening run while trimming 2.99 seconds. Classmate Meggan Grande (La Plagne, France/ Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 37th in 2:22.98, cutting 2.08 seconds. The Purple Knights' other four competitors did not qualify for a second run.
During the women's mass-start 15K classic race, senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) paced the Purple Knights by placing 61st at 57:37.5. Junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 74th in a time of 1:00:32.2, and first-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) crossed the finish line in 1:03:15.2 during her college debut to take 81st, and her team's third spot.
On the men's side, sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) nabbed 68th in the mass-start 20K classic event at 1:07:02.3. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 74th in 1:08:34.2, and sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) claimed 85th at 1:14:06.0.
