LYME CENTER, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. - Three Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiers broke into the top 30 during the slalom on Saturday at the Dartmouth College Carnival, as the Purple Knight Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to place 12th among 16 institutions at the two-day event. Saint Michael's totaled 185 points at the carnival, which was won by the University of Vermont (1,018). Alpine races took place at the Dartmouth Skiway, while the Nordic races occurred at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
Junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) turned in his second-best performance of the season by tying for 22nd place in the slalom thanks to a two-run combined time of 1:45.96. Senior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 24th at 1:46.05, and sophomore Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) was the Purple and Gold's third scorer, placing 28th in 1:47.53. Thanks to its three high scorers, Saint Michael's tied for sixth among 15 teams in the men's Alpine portion of the day.
A season-high five women qualified for a second slalom run on Saturday. Sophomore Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) was her team's top finisher for the sixth time this winter, nabbing 40th in 1:55.74. Senior Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) clocked in at 1:57.65 as the 42nd-place finisher, and sophomore Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) narrowly trailed in 43rd, at 1:58.37.
Junior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) turned in the top performance by a Saint Michael's women's Nordic skier for the sixth time this winter by taking 53rd in the 15K classic at 58:23.8. Sophomore Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) placed 58th, while senior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) took 60th.
First-year Ryan Boquist (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) was a personal-best 59th in the men's 20K classic, crossing the finish line in 1:07:53.4. Junior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was one spot behind Boquist, taking 60th with a time of 1:08:06.8, and first-year Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) was 62nd.
Both Saint Michael's teams head to the Williams College Carnival next Friday and Saturday.
