CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine/WATERVILLE, Maine - The Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing team posted a sixth-place point total to aid the men's and women's Alpine and Nordic teams on Saturday during the final day of the two-day Colby College Carnival. Between the programs, the Purple Knights were 14th out of 16 institutions with 158 points, just 10 behind 12th-place Colby-Sawyer College. The University of Vermont won with 1,012 points. The weekend's Alpine races were held at Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Nordic competitions were contested at Quarry Road Recreation Area.
Three male Alpine skiers broke into the top 25 on Saturday during the slalom, with junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) topping the Purple and Gold by placing 15th with a two-run time of 1:30.75, trimming 2.05 seconds off of his opening run for his second passage down the mountain. Senior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 20th at 1:31.67, and sophomore Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) nabbed 24th at 1:33.80. The trio combined for 67 points, within six of fifth-place Saint Lawrence University.
Sophomore captain Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) was the lone Saint Michael's woman to qualify for a second run during the slalom, as she finished the day 37th in 1:54.00.
During the Nordic races, three rookies took the Purple Knights' top six spots. First-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) placed 63rd in the men's 15K freestyle, crossing the finish line in 41:34.4, to pace Saint Michael's. Junior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 81st, followed by first-year Ryan Boquist (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) in 83rd.
Senior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) was the first Purple and Gold woman to complete the 10K freestyle, nabbing 76th at 34:50.2. First-year Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) was 82nd in 35:45.2, while junior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) stood four seconds back and placed 83rd.
The Purple Knights head to the University of New Hampshire Carnival next Friday and Saturday, with the Alpine races slated for Attitash Mountain Resort and the Nordic events to be held at Jackson Nordic Center.
