CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing senior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) and first-year Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) both broke into the top 20 of the giant slalom on Friday during the Colby College Carnival at Sugarloaf Mountain.
The Purple Knights stand eighth among 13 schools with 91 points heading into the second day, when Nordic races begin at the Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville.
Farrell clocked in at 1:43.15 between his two runs on Friday, helping the men's Alpine team place fifth out of 13 squads. Farrell's showing of 51.10 on his final trek down the hill was the ninth-best second run of the competition. Sophomore Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 28th in 1:44.80, trimming 0.08 seconds off his opening run, while first-year Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) shaved 0.81 ticks off his first run to place 39th in 1:48.27 as the Purple Knights' third scorer.
Hall took 17th with a composite time of 1:49.82, moving up eight spots in the standings thanks to her second run. First-year Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) was the second scorer for Saint Michael's, while the third scoring position went unclaimed.
