MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team was swept by Assumption College, 3-0 and 8-0 in six innings, during a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Southern New Hampshire University's SNHU Softball Field. The Purple Knights are 4-14 overall and 1-7 in the NE10, while the Greyhounds improved to 8-5 and 3-0.
Sophomore Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was 1-for-2 with a walk for Saint Michael's, which played the host team during the twinbill, in the opener, and classmate Julia Sevigny (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) walked and was hit by a pitch. Senior Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) allowed all three runs during a complete-game effort, striking out nine and walking one. It was her 90th career appearance in the circle, matching Megan O'Connor '09 for third in program history. Brown's final strikeout was her 100th of the spring, as she joined Meggan Roberge Dulude '07 as the only Purple Knights with at least three 100-strikeout seasons.
Senior Stephanie Menard was 2-for-3 with a run and two doubles for Assumption, and first-year Haley Drakoulakos finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. Classmate Mia Nowicki spun a two-hit shutout, striking out four and walking four.
Saint Michael's threatened in the second inning when Rathwell led off with a walk and sophomore Danielle Markowski (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) singled, and both moved 60 feet on sophomore Aleksandra Apkarian's (Butler, N.J./Butler) sacrifice bunt before the final two batters were set down. The Greyhounds plated two runs in the fourth, as Drakoulakos led off with a double before scoring on Menard's one-out single. Menard later came home on junior Julia Mazzeo's two-out RBI knock. Menard made it 3-0 in the fifth with a two-out RBI single.
The Purple Knights strung together two late threats. Sevigny was plunked with one down in the fifth and sophomore Katie Terban (Georgetown, Mass./Saint Mary's) followed with a walk, but senior Hannah St. Don's (Lakeville, Mass./Sacred Heart) ensuing sac bunt preceded an inning-ending out. Sevigny and St. Don also walked in the bottom of the seventh, but the batter representing the tying run grounded out to end the game.
Junior Hayley Craddock (Campbell River, British Columbia/Carihi Secondary School/Highline) went 2-for-3 with a double in the nightcap, while senior Chandler Wilder (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) dropped two sac bunts, tying Heather French '10 for second in program history with 25 for her career. Rathwell took the loss after allowing six earned runs in five-plus innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Victoria Petrie was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run for the Greyhounds, first-year Brooke Murphy batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Drakoulakos drove in three runs. Senior Kendal Roy tossed a five-hit shutout while striking out six and walking none.
Markowski and Sevigny singled in the second before being left on base, and Assumption scored four runs without getting the ball out of the infield in the following frame. After teammates beat out three straight infield singles, Murphy's fielder's choice brought home the first run before an error plated the second, and Drakoulakos' two-run squeeze bunt made it 4-0. Craddock doubled in the bottom half and got as far as third base but no further, and the Greyhounds scored twice in each the fifth and sixth innings, with two groundouts scoring runs in the former before Petrie smacked a two-run homer in the latter.
The Purple Knights visit Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
