MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team opened a three-game weekend series with Assumption College by losing a 3-0 decision on Friday at Southern New Hampshire University's SNHU Softball Field. The Purple Knights are 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds improved to 6-5 while playing their NE10 opener. The teams complete the set tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
Sophomore Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) led Saint Michael's, which played the home team, with a 2-for-3 effort, while junior Fallon Tierney (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) added a hit and a walk. Senior Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) allowed two earned runs in the complete-game loss, as she struck out seven and walked two.
First-year Alyssa Beaton was 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two doubles for Assumption, which played its first game since March 9. Classmate Brooke Murphy went 2-for-4, and senior Kendal Roy scattered eight singles during the shutout. She fanned seven and walked one.
With two down in the bottom of the first inning, the Purple Knights loaded the bases, as Tierney walked before Rathwell and sophomore Danielle Markowski (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) rapped back-to-back singles, but the final batter hit into a fielder's choice. Around two singles and a walk, Brown struck out the side in the second inning while leaving three Greyhounds on base.
Murphy beat out an infield single and stole second with no one out in the third before taking the next 60 feet on a sac bunt, but Brown induced a groundout before fanning the final hitter. Assumption broke through in the fourth, as Beaton led off with a double, moved up on a sac bunt and came home on junior Julia Mazzeo's fielder's choice. Brown struck out the final two hitters. In the home half, Rathwell and sophomore Aleksandra Apkarian (Butler, N.J./Butler) singled to put runners at the corners with one down, but Roy left them there.
Beaton's two-out RBI double made it 2-0 in the fifth before senior Hannah St. Don (Lakeville, Mass./Sacred Heart) and Tierney singled in the bottom half, but they were stranded at the corners. Mazzeo scored an unearned run in the sixth, and Saint Michael's never again brought the tying run to the plate.
