Softball completes three-game weekend series with loss to Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. - In finishing up a three-game weekend series, the Saint Michael's College softball team dropped an 8-1 decision to Stonehill College on the Southern New Hampshire University Softball Field on Sunday. The Purple Knights are now 3-20 overall and 2-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Skyhawks are 14-11 and 10-3. Saint Michael's played the home team in all three contests after they were moved from Doc Jacobs Field.

Junior Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) was 2-for-3 with a run for the Purple Knights, and senior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, a double and a walk. Classmate Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and junior Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) also both drew a walk, and sophomore Chandler Wilder (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) was hit by a pitch and stole a base. Classmate Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) took the loss after allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings.

Senior Alison Sumski was 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs and two home runs for Stonehill, and junior Michelle Carbone hit a three-run home run. Senior Lauren Esposito finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Carbone was also the winning pitcher, allowing one run on three hits while fanning seven and walking three.

Senior Megan Staudle plated the first run by doubling home Esposito two batters into the game, but Brown worked around two other base runners in the first inning thanks to an interference call, a popup and a strikeout. Brazeau reached on a leadoff error in the home half and moved up on Staples' two-out single, but the Purple Knights were kept off the board. In the second, Brown worked around a leadoff single before DelGreco and Wilder stood at second and third, respectively, with two down in the bottom portion of the inning, but a groundout ended the threat.

The Skyhawks padded their lead to 3-0 on Sumski's two-out, two-run home run in the third, and Saint Michael's again stranded a pair in the home half of the fourth. In the fifth, Carbone hit a three-run homer before Sumski, the next batter, also went deep, making it 7-0. DelGreco doubled home Staples with one out in the sixth, but Stonehill got the run back in the seventh on Sumski's RBI groundout.

The Purple Knights' scheduled contest on Monday with 25th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University has been postponed, so they return to action next on Wednesday at Franklin Pierce University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
