MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team twice fell in five innings to Stonehill College, 14-0 and 12-3, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference action at the Southern New Hampshire University Softball Field. As the home team, the Purple Knights are now 3-19 overall and 2-10 in the league, while the Skyhawks are 13-11 and 9-3.
Senior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) and junior Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) both went 1-for-2 in the opener for Saint Michael's, with Barbato doubling, while senior Jenna Maksian (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) drew a walk. Sophomore Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) took the loss after allowing four runs - two earned - in two-plus innings before first-year Anna Meusel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) yielded three earned runs over three frames of relief. The Purple Knights gave up nine unearned runs.
Senior Alison Sumski was 4-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs and two doubles for Stonehill, junior Lianna Jordan finished 3-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs and a walk, and senior Megan Staudle was 2-for-4 with three runs. Classmate Sarah Ropiak worked the two-hit shutout while striking out eight and walking one.
Junior Michelle Carbone and Sumski hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two down in the first inning to stake the Skyhawks to an early lead, and Jordan came through with a two-out, two-run double to make it 4-0 in the second. Barbato led off the home half with a double but moved no further, and Jordan's RBI knock, again with two down, pushed the lead to five in the fourth inning. Fifteen batters came to the plate in the fifth for Stonehill, which scored nine runs on nine hits and one error. Six runs were unearned, with each of those runs coming with two out.
Maksian finished 2-for-3 with two runs in the nightcap, and junior Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles. Barbato drove in a run, and Brown took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 0.1 innings. First-year Molly Feeney (Valhalla, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) yielded four earned runs over the final 4.2 frames.
Sumski was 3-for-4 with two runs, and senior Megan Ruonavaara batted 2-for-4 with three RBIs while allowing one earned run during a complete-game victory. Jordan and junior Cassandra Squeri both had two hits and two RBIs, and Staudle added two hits and two runs.
Stonehill plated eight runs on seven hits in the first inning, as Jordan's two-run double opened the scoring. Staples hit an RBI double in the home half before Barbato brought in first-year Fallon Tierney (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) with a groundout, but the Skyhawks got those runs back when Ruonavaara beat out an RBI bunt single in the second and Carbone added an RBI fielder's choice in the third. Two more Stonehill runners came across in the fifth before Maksian singled with one down and scored on Staples' two-out double.
The teams finish up a three-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire.
