Softball Splits Pair Of One-Run Games With Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. Saint Michael's College split a pair of one-run games with Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Purple Knights were edged by the Hawks, 4-3, and in game two, Saint Michael's (8-12, 2-4 NE-10) recorded a 3-2 victory versus Saint Anselm (7-15, 2-8 NE-10).

In the nightcap, freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) pitched a complete-game three-hitter, allowing no earned runs and no walks while striking out four batters. The Purple Knights snapped a two-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out run-scoring single by freshman Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester). Harkins finished with three singles in game two, as did junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester), who like Harkins also scored once and knocked in a run. Sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) added two singles in the win, while senior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) had an RBI single to lead the Purple Knights' 11-hit attack.

For Saint Anselm, senior Julie Pistorino (Abington, Mass.) tied the game in the third inning with a two-run, two-out single. Freshmen Nicole Baginski (Beverly, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Maciag (Gales Ferry, Conn.) also singled for the Hawks, while junior Jaclyn Kinsman (Tewksbury, Mass.) took the loss on the mound, allowing three hits and one earned run in three innings of relief of starter Kathleen Golden (Somerset, Mass.).

In game one, junior Brianna Welenc's (Greenfield, Mass.) bases-clearing double with two outs in the top of the sixth inning turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead, and Saint Anselm hung on for the comeback win. Welenc added a single for the Hawks, while classmate Danielle Comer (Worcester, Mass.) added a run-scoring double and a single to pace Saint Anselm's seven-hit attack. Senior Brigitte June (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing six hits while fanning three batters.

For the Purple Knights, Brooks laced a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning, giving the home team a 2-0 lead. Brooks added a double for Saint Michael's, but struck out with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) added a double, single and run scored, while Harkins singled and scored in the seventh inning. On the mound, Roberge suffered the hard-luck loss, as she retired her first eight batters and struck out seven in a complete-game effort.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. twinbill against Southern New Hampshire University. Saint Anselm next hosts Dowling College in a pair of non-league contests on Monday at 3 p.m.
