COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College (17-23, 11-15
NE-10) picked up a pair of wins over Bentley College (6-37, 3-25
NE-10) in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Monday
afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Purple Knights
defeated the Falcons, 3-0, and in game two, Saint Michael's (14-20,
8-12 NE-10) needed 11 innings to earn the 3-2 win.
In game one, junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) lead off the bottom of the first inning with a base hit to leftfield, and quickly got into scoring position by stealing second base. After a strikeout by sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute), senior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) brought Brooks around by crushing her fifth homerun of the season over the leftfield fence. Still up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, senior Elizabeth Pigeon (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) reached on a fielding error by freshman shortstop Alex Hitchcock (Abington, Mass./Abington), and advanced to second on junior Maureen McGinn's (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) wild pitch. Brooks plated Pigeon with a double to leftfield, and freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) handled the rest, going all seven innings, allowing five hits, while striking out eight in the shutout victory.
In the nightcap, both teams played eight innings before Bentley broke the scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning with Hitchcock's RBI double that scored sophomore Leigh Cavanaugh (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire). In the bottom half of the inning, Meagan Newland was first pitch swinging and evened the score at one with her second homerun of the afternoon. The international tiebreaker rule allows the batting team to place a runner on second base to start from the 10th inning on, and with Jenna Crowell (Kennebunk, Maine/Cheverus) on base, sophomore Diane Morrison (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) bunted the freshman to third, and she came around to score on freshman Amanda Cifarelli's (Rye, N.Y./Rye) sacrifice fly to right field. Sophomore Lindsey Howland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) started the bottom half on second, and after being advanced with a bunt, she scored when Brooks flew out to centerfield. The Purple Knights were able to strand the go ahead run on third base in the 11th inning, and with Katy Newland on second, older sister Meagan moved her to third with a bunt, and she came across to represent the game winning run when O'Connor singled to right field. Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) was credited with the win, throwing all 11 innings, striking out 10, while allowing just one earned run.
Saint Michael's will wrap up the 2006 season with a Tuesday afternoon home contest against Merrimack College.
