COLCHESTER, Vt. - The parents of Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse alumnus Colin Cronin '18 have established the Colin Michael Cronin Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory, creating an endowed scholarship at the College that will be given annually to a returning member of the men's lacrosse program.
Julie and Michael Cronin started the fund in honor of Colin, who died unexpectedly in November at the age of 23. The scholarship will aim to reward a player who exemplifies Colin's greatest qualities: on- and off-field leadership, dedication to academic success, community service and volunteerism, and providing support to peers academically and athletically. Those wishing to contribute to the fund can do so directly here.
Colin was not only a Dean's List student who qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll six times due to his academic success, but he was also named New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Academic All-New England as a senior.
A native of North Andover, Mass., Colin emerged as a starter on defense during his senior year, when the captain registered career highs in ground balls (19) and caused turnovers (13). He anchored a defensive unit that turned in the team's best goals-against average (9.57) in five seasons. Colin had 32 ground balls in 37 career games.
Colin was heavily involved in extracurricular Athletics activities during his time on campus as a member of the Purple Knight Leadership Academy (PKLA), Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Special Olympics Committee and Hope Happens Here. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology in May with a pre-med focus.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Head Coach Alex Smith
"Colin was an amazing teammate and someone I'm really proud to have gotten to know and coached during my time here at Saint Mike's. He was one of the hardest workers I've been around and experienced a ton of success on and off the field. His personality was infectious, and he had a great impact on so many people. We are saddened by his passing, but look forward to honoring his memory this season and beyond with the establishment of this scholarship."

"While it does not make sense that he is gone from our lives, out of anybody, Colin would want us to keep strong and live life to the fullest every day as he did in his time with us. Colin was a roommate, a friend and a brother to the Saint Michael's lacrosse family. Whether you were a freshman on the team or someone closer to his age, Colin was looked up to by his peers as someone who showed true ambition to excel in the classroom while being a physical force and leader on the field. I witnessed every morning Colin waking up and truly wanting to win the day like nobody I had really met before. It is our job to carry his legacy forward and make sure future members of the Saint Michael's community hear the stories of how he impacted us."
Teammate Brian Loughlin '18
"Colin Cronin epitomized everything that I strive to be. He was hard working, competitive, loyal, and an unbelievable friend. He was our fearless leader on and off the lacrosse field. Colin will live on through his family, friends, teammates, and the countless others that were inspired by his outgoing personality and love for life."
Teammate Charlie Murphy '18
"Colin Cronin: A man and brother worth celebrating. Life can be simple at times, and life can be extremely difficult all the same. One minute you can smile and laugh, reminiscing about the amazing memories you've made, and the next you can cry. We cry and grieve because of how lucky we are to have made such special memories. Life's ups and downs are what keep us striving to be at our best. There's no rhyme or reason to it, they just provide us with extra motivation to be positive, remind the people around you that you love them, and to never take anything for granted, because you never know what comes next. The importance of all of this is to live every day to your fullest potential. Every day is a new challenge. It's how we react to those challenges that mold us into the people we become. Cherish every moment like it's your last, and never let go to the amazing memories that you make every day. Colin Cronin embodied all of this. His positivity and outlook on life was unmatched by anyone. He was and is an inspiration to so many, and I was lucky to call him my best friend."
