COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team scored the final six goals but fell just short in a 10-8 loss to No. 1 Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 4-9 overall and 1-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference after facing their fourth nationally-ranked league foe. The Dolphins, whose ranking is according to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), are 14-0 and 10-0. The Dolphins have qualified for 15 of the last 16 NCAA Tournaments while winning two of the past five. This was the Dolphins' smallest margin of victory this season.
Junior Connor McGuirk (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) tallied two goals and an assist for the Purple Knights while senior Charlie Murphy (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) registered one goal and two assists. Sophomore Justin Richmond (New Market, Md./Linganore) and first-year Jon Lockwood (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) both recorded two goals while Richmond scooped up four ground balls, caused one turnover and was 6-for-13 on faceoffs, and Lockwood got one ground ball. Sophomore Alec Sharlow (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) registered the final goal with one ground ball.
Senior Neil Gallagher (Stowe, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) scooped up two ground balls and caused three turnovers, classmate Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers, sophomore Will Moriarty (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) had four ground balls and one caused turnover, and junior Matt Cotter (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) scooped up two ground balls. Richmond went 6-for-13 on faceoffs. Gallagher extended his career caused turnovers total to 53 to tie Brian Devilly '16 for fourth place in program history.
Senior Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) denied 11 shots during the first 45 minutes while also nabbing one ground ball before first-year Dominic Joy (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) came in for relief during the final quarter, picking up one save and a ground ball while allowing no goals.
First-year Devin Andrews led the Dolphins on four points with two goals and two assists while picking up four ground balls and causing one turnover. Senior Justin Kesselring tacked on two goals and an assist, sophomore Ross Filtch recorded two goals, senior Greg White and sophomore Jake Lewis both had a goal and one helper, while sophomore Matt Hutchings and first-year Ben McCreary notched a goal apiece. Senior Jake Sweeney served 46:35 in net while junior Kyle Lumpe notched a time of 13:25 as both goalies picked up five saves.
The Purple Knights struck first at 9:50 of the opening quarter as Richmond slipped one by Sweeney before Hutchings tied it up at 8:18. Kesselring scored at 1:35 to pull Le Moyne ahead 2-1, but Lockwood tallied with only three seconds left to tie the game again. The Dolphins registered the two lone goals of the second stanza, with McCreary and Filtch tallying at 7:17 and 5:26, respectively, to take the 4-2 advantage, kicking off an 8-0 run.
Andrews and White tallied at 12:43 and 11:35 of the third quarter, respectively, and Kesselring made it 7-2 at 7:13. Three Dolphins scored in a 2:43 stretch to cap their team's run and offense for the game before Richmond scored at the buzzer to bring the Purple Knights within 10-3.
The Purple Knights held the Dolphins scoreless during the final quarter as they went on to tally five of their own goals, with Le Moyne being shut out during a period for the first time since the opening frame of its 2017 NCAA Tournament first-round game. Murphy set McGuirk up to sail one by Lumpe at 10:04 before Sharlow tallied at 8:45, and McGuirk went ahead at 6:00 to register another goal, making it 10-6. McGuirk aided Murphy at 3:27 before Lockwood scored on a man-up opportunity, with a helper from Murphy, with 25 seconds left. Murphy was able to get a shot off with 15 seconds left that hit the post and went out of play.
Prior to the contest, nine seniors were honored on Senior Day: Frank, Gallagher, Murphy, Sonberg, Matt Arnold (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset), Colin Cronin (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), Dan Johnson (Ringwood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Brian Loughlin (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston).
The Purple Knights complete their regular-season schedule by traveling to No. 2 Merrimack College next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors have qualified for the last three NCAA Tournaments.
