COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse seniors Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) both earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, March 18.
Karanasios recorded nine ground balls, two caused turnovers, a game-winning goal and an assist in a 2-0 week, aiding a defense that allowed only five goals per game. During a 7-4 win at Chestnut Hill (Pa.) College last Tuesday, he tallied the winner while notching four ground balls. In a 9-6 victory over Georgian Court (N.J.) University on Thursday, Karanasios had an assist, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. The long-stick midfielder has recorded a career high of three points on two goals and an assist while registering 11 ground balls and three caused turnovers through five games.
Sonberg turned in a 5.00 goals-against average, .655 save percentage, 9.5 saves per game and 4.0 ground balls per game in a 2-0 week. Against Chestnut Hill, he had 12 saves and three ground balls while helping the Purple Knights post a shutout second half. Sonberg added seven stops and five ground balls against Georgian Court, eventually running his shutout streak to 56:55 before the Lions scored their first goal. After only playing in three games last year, Sonberg has started all five games with an 8.20 GAA, .570 save percentage, 9.0 saves per game, and 2.0 ground balls per game with a 3-2 record. He is tied for third in the NE10 in saves while standing seventh in GAA and save percentage.
The Purple Knights, who are 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the NE10, host No. 7 Pace University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Setters' ranking is according to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll. They have also qualified for the last three NCAA Tournaments.
