Men's lacrosse pulls away from Assumption to notch NE-10 road victory

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team doubled up Assumption College, 14-7, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play at the Assumption Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights, who were receiving votes toward this week's New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll, are 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the league, while the Greyhounds are 2-7 and 2-4.

Senior Mark Yetter (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery/Delaware) posted his fifth career four-goal game, netting four tallies and picking up three assists while also scooping four ground balls. He now has 94 points for his two-school college career. Sophomore Brian Loughlin (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) notched his fifth hat trick of the year behind three goals, in addition to an assist, and senior Jamie McGill (Needham, Mass./Needham) scored twice. In his first start of the year, sophomore Matt Hanley (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) made a career-high 16 saves in 58:33 while also picking up three ground balls, and senior defender Brian Devilly (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) had a career-high six caused turnovers and a career-high-tying six ground balls.

Junior Taylor Wallace (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) had a goal and two assists, sophomore Patch Ryan (Holden, Mass./Saint John's) notched a goal and an assist, and senior Daegan Goodman (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier), junior Andrew Colyer (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) and first-year Cameron Jung (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) all scored once. Sophomore Neil Gallagher (Sudbury, Mass./Green Mountain Valley School) posted three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and first-year Dan Dromeshauser (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) won seven faceoffs. Sophomore Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) had a pair of saves in 1:27 of relief during the latter stages of the contest.

Senior Connor Munisteri led Assumption with two goals, while first-years Dan Farrell and Travis Reid both had a goal and an assist. Senior Nick Guarino went 16-of-23 on faceoffs with 10 ground balls, and first-year Colby Hamwey made nine saves.

Munisteri potted the opening goal of the game with 8:25 left in the opening quarter, kicking off a stretch of four goals in a 4:02 span. Yetter converted Ryan's pass at 6:36 before Farrell put Assumption back on top 1:09 later, but Loughlin knotted the contest once more with 4:23 remaining, the first goal in a 5-0 Purple Knight run. Neither team scored in the nearly 10 minutes that followed before Ryan scored with 9:28 left in the second and McGill pushed the lead to 4-2 just 26 seconds later, with Yetter assisting.

Yetter fed Loughlin at 6:10 before Colyer extended the Saint Michael's advantage to four with 4:53 remaining, capping a 4:35 span during which the visitors scored four times. With 21 seconds to go, Munisteri scored his second goal, and the Purple Knights took a 6-3 edge into halftime.

Senior Cameron Murphy trimmed the Assumption deficit to two goals 1:42 into the third quarter, but another quick stretch of scoring helped Saint Michael's extend the advantage. Yetter scored twice, Loughlin had a goal and an assist, and Goodman capped a 4-0 run that took 5:24 to elapse, and the visitors led 10-4 with 4:26 to go.

Sophomore Patrick O'Brien brought the Greyhounds within five at 3:23, but McGill scored again with 12:09 left in regulation, as the visitors held a 4-2 scoring edge in the fourth quarter. During a late 1:48 stretch, Yetter assisted Wallace and scored unassisted 14 seconds later before Jung found the net.

The Purple Knights head to Saint Anselm College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game. The Hawks are receiving votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll while sitting third in the NEILA's regional rankings.
