LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Twelve players scored, and the Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team downed Georgian Court (N.J.) University, 19-9, on Monday during their first meeting at the GCU Track & Field Complex. The Purple Knights improved to 1-4, while the Lions, who are in their first year of varsity play, slipped to 0-8.
Sophomore Brian Loughlin (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led the visitors with his third hat trick of the season to go along with a career-high-tying five assists for a personal-best eight points. Classmate Patch Ryan (Holden, Mass./Saint John's) potted his first college hat trick, while senior Mark Yetter (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery/Delaware) and first-year Harry Colyer (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) both had two goals and two assists, with Colyer's tallies his first in college. Senior Jamie McGill (Needham, Mass./Needham) added two goals.
First-year Cameron Jung (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) posted one goal and two assists, junior Tim Connor (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) had one tally and a helper, while senior Daegan Goodman (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier), juniors Andrew Colyer (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) and Doug Legris (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax/Hiram), sophomore Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and first-year Connor McGuirk (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) all scored once. McGuirk's goal was his first as a collegian, while Legris had his initial tally since transferring in for this year. Sophomore John Miller (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) dished out two assists.
Senior Brian Devilly (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and first-year Conor DiNatale (Needham, Mass./Needham) both collected four ground balls, and senior T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made two first-period stops to notch the win. Sophomore Matt Hanley (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) denied three shots in the second period before classmate Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) turned away a career-best 10 shots in the second half. Devilly pushed his career caused turnovers total to 36 in the contest, tying Tyler Violette '12 for sixth in program history.
Junior Cory Boyle scored three times for Georgian Court, and classmate CJ Francisco posted two goals and three assists. Junior Tyler Verdoni went 22-for-31 on faceoffs with nine ground balls, and first-year Patrick Castiglione took the loss, making six saves in 35:13. Sophomore Jack Wilson turned aside seven shots in relief.
The Purple Knights held a 14-5 advantage in shots during the opening period en route to scoring the first seven goals, with Ryan completing his hat trick by the time 4:50 remained. Ryan opened the scoring at 13:33 before Yetter, Connor and Frank followed with three goals during a 1:23 span to make it 4-0. Ryan scored on a man-up opportunity at 7:49 before Loughlin followed 41 seconds later. The Lions' first two goals came via extra-man chances, as the hosts didn't score with the teams playing even until Francisco netted a marker 23:48 into the game, making it 10-3 with 6:12 left in the first half. Saint Michael's led 12-3 at halftime.
Following first-year Joseph Ramirez's second man-up goal of the day, 13 seconds into the third quarter, the Purple Knights scored the next six goals over a 7:41 stretch, with McGuirk scoring his first goal at 8:40, Legris finding the net at 4:40 and Harry Colyer posting his initial career tally at 1:59. The Lions ended the game on a 5-1 run, with Saint Michael's adding one final goal in the final 16:58 of the game.
The Purple Knights continue a run of four games in eight days by visiting Post University for the first time on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
