SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team collected a 4-1 win over Stonehill College Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights, who improved to 9-7-1 overall and 6-3 in the NE10, took the season series 2-1 and are now alone in first place in the NE10 following a loss from Saint Anselm College. The Skyhawks are 5-11-1 and 3-5-1. The Purple Knights won at home in the regular season against Stonehill for the first time since Feb. 23, 2010.
Junior Sam D'Antuono (Hingham, Mass./Dexter School) tallied his fourth and fifth goals of the season for the Purple Knights while also going 22-for-28 in faceoffs. Junior Jack Ouellette (Arlington, Mass./Dexter School) and sophomore Hadan Jordan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Boston Bandits) pitched in a goal apiece. Senior Eric Salzillo (Johnston, R.I./Boston Bandits) added two assists as first-year Niall Foster (Newmarket, N.H./Walpole Express) was 7-for-11 from the dot. In 59:28 of play, junior Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Pomfret School) recorded 21 saves. Johnson is now tied for ninth in program history with 17 career victories.
Junior Shamus Maloney notched the lone goal for the Skyhawks. Sophomore Cameron Wright went 12-for-23 in faceoffs while classmate Connor Jewett went 8-for-15. Junior Billy Palmer served 57:54 in net with 41 saves.
Jewett held a shorthanded breakaway at 7:00 to have Johnson deny the try in the first period. Stonehill's greatest chance came at 13:56 as sophomore Jack Hall took a right-circle attempt with Johnson picking up a glove save. With 36 seconds left, Ouellette's shot that went in was called off because of contact with the goalie.
Senior Keegan Finn (Yarmouth, Mass./Bay State Breakers) intercepted a pass at 1:27 of the second stanza and ripped a shot on net from the left circle that was saved. The Skyhawks held a 3-on-1 opportunity at 5:23 as Johnson made a pad save to shut down Maloney's try. D'Antuono beat a defender at 13:41 and drove toward the net to get a shot rejected. After senior Nathan Foice (Essex, Vt./The Winchendon School) found Salzillo in the corner, Jordan drove toward the right post to receive a backdoor pass to send one home for the Purple Knights at 17:26 during a power-play opportunity.
Stonehill's Maloney tied up the game at 6:33 of the third period, getting his shot through Johnson's five-hole. After receiving a pass from sophomore William Santangeli (Oakville, Ontario/Saint Mark's School), junior Nic Hermary (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Melfort Mustangs) sailed a pass across the ice to D'Antuono, who took a shot at 10:51 from the right circle with it going in by the far post to bring the Purple Knights ahead 2-1. During a power-play opportunity, Ouellette scored from the middle of the slot to hit Palmer's five-hole at 16:01. With his team a player down and a Stonehill empty net, D'Antuono intercepted a pass at center ice before immediately shooting to net his second goal of the game at 19:38 to finish up the scoring.
The Purple Knights travel to Southern New Hampshire University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to begin a weekend series.
