2017-18 Men's Ice Hockey Outlook

COLCHESTER, Vt. - One season after falling in overtime during the Northeast-10 Conference Championship title game, the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team will rely upon numerous key veterans and 12 first-years, its largest such group in 14 years, while tackling a new 18-game NE10 schedule this winter.

Head Coach:
Damian DiGiulian (6th Year)
Assistant Coaches: Dan Allen (2nd Year), Brent Truchon (6th Year)
Volunteer Assistant Coach: Maggie DiMasi (2nd Year)

2016-17 Overall Record:
2016-17 Northeast-10 Conference Record: 4-1

First-Years: 12

Saint Michael's tied for first in the NE10's regular-season standings last year, claiming at least a share of the fifth NE10 regular-season crown in program history, and sixth from any league ... the Purple Knights' top two point scorers return, as do two of their top three in both goals and assists ... among 14 returners are six forwards who appeared in at least 20 games, three defensemen who made 23-plus appearances, and two goalies who accounted for every second ... 12 first-years number the program's largest contingent since fielding 14 in 2003-04 ... Saint Michael's advanced to the NE10 Championship title game for the third time in four seasons, with each ending in a loss, including a 3-2 overtime setback to Assumption College last year ... after being affiliated with either the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) or the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) each year since being reestablished as a varsity program in 1982-83, the Purple Knights are now solely members of the NE10 - they had held dual membership since 1999-2000 - and will take on each of their six league counterparts three times this winter. In addition to facing Assumption, Franklin Pierce University, Saint Anselm College, Southern New Hampshire University and Stonehill College during conference play, Saint Michael's has three games with NE10 scheduling partner Post University, which will not compete in the postseason tournament.

Saint Michael's opens its season on Friday at the State University of New York at Potsdam before returning home the next day to host the Bears ... the Purple Knights take on each of their NE10 foes once in the first semester before facing each for two-game weekend series in the second semester ... among its remaining non-conference opponents, the Purple and Gold faces Amherst College, which is receiving votes toward both Division III preseason national polls, and Castleton University and Wesleyan University, both tournament semifinalists in their respective conferences last winter ... the four-team NE10 Championship begins with semifinals on Feb. 24.
