COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's basketball senior Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) claimed his second career Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-District 1 accolade on Thursday. Holmes was one of five student-athletes who were recognized for their accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom, with each hailing from the Northeast-10 Conference.
After becoming one of 13 Academic All-Americans ever at the College as a junior, Holmes is the first two-time Academic All-District pick in his program's history. At least one Saint Michael's student-athlete has now been recognized with an Academic All-District accolade in 17 consecutive school years. Holmes earned a laurel voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) while advancing to the Academic All-America national ballot, which will be voted upon and selected next month. Holmes will seek to become the third two-time Academic All-America pick in College history.
Holmes averages 21.0 points, buoyed by five 30-point games, as he stands first in the NCAA East Region in free throw shooting (90.1%), fourth in three-point percentage (45.3%) and threes made per game (3.1), and eighth in scoring. Among all Division II players, Holmes is 13th in free throw accuracy and 19th in three-point success. He adds career highs in rebounding (4.3) and steals (1.1) while dishing off 1.6 assists per contest. Thus far in his 99-game career, Holmes is third in program history in threes (275) and fifth in points (1,760).
A second-year captain, Holmes is a double major in economics and mathematics while registering a 3.54 cumulative grade-point average. He landed Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2 CCA) All-Region and NE10 All-Conference laurels as a junior, when he claimed his second career academic all-league honor. Holmes has qualified for the NE10 Academic Honor Roll seven times.
Holmes netted 37 points behind 7-of-10 three-point shooting against Molloy (N.Y.) College on Nov. 10 before contributing a similar showing on Feb. 20 with 35 points on a 9-of-14 display from beyond the arc against regionally-ranked Bentley University. He came within one three-pointer of a school record he shares during the Bentley contest. Holmes posted 33 points and nine rebounds while shooting 10-of-10 on free throws versus Post University on Dec. 18, going 5-of-10 from deep, before totaling 32 points versus The College of Saint Rose on Jan. 9, connecting on all 12 free throw tries and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Holmes turned in another 30-point contest at Franklin Pierce University on Feb. 9, going 13-of-14 on free throws and 3-of-5 on threes.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or significant reserve. The NCAA Division II District 1 consists of members of the NE10, Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and East Coast Conference (ECC). Through the Academic All-America program, CoSIDA names separate teams at each the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III levels, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
