COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's basketball seniors Derek Cheatom (Buffalo, N.Y./The Park School of Buffalo) and Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) were both named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the cycle ending on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Cheatom landed his fourth accolade of the season, while Holmes claimed his second.
Cheatom averaged 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals during a 1-1 week. He shot 53.1 percent from the floor, including 7-of-9 (77.8%) from three-point range. In a 91-86 loss to regionally-ranked Dominican (N.Y.) College on Saturday, Cheatom totaled a career-high 31 points behind an 11-for-18 shooting performance, including a 6-of-7 three-point effort, while adding a career-high-tying 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. During an 80-71 win against Post University on Tuesday, he turned in 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting with three boards, one block and one steal. Dominican was ninth in last week's D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.
Cheatom averages career highs in scoring (17.9), rebounding (6.5), assists (2.1), offensive rebounding (1.3), steals (1.2) and blocks (0.7) while shooting 42.1 percent overall, including 37.5 percent from three-point range. Cheatom is an 85.7 percent free throw shooter, going 42-for-49 after a cumulative 47-for-76 (61.8%) effort his first three seasons combined. He is eighth in the NE10 in scoring and free throw shooting and tied for 11th in steals. Among all NCAA East Region players, Cheatom is tied for ninth in free throw percentage.
Holmes averaged 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 block during a 1-1 week. He shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 6-of-15 (40.0%) from three-point range, and knocked down all 12 free throw tries. Against regionally-ranked Dominican, Holmes had 13 points, six rebounds, one assist and one block before turning in 33 points, nine boards, two assists, one block and a steal versus Post. He was 5-for-10 from three and 10-of-10 at the charity stripe in the second contest, becoming the seventh Purple Knight to ever go at least 10-for-10 in a game.
Holmes averages 21.0 points thanks to shooting 42.3 percent from three-point range and 89.6 percent on free throws. He adds a career-high 5.9 rebounds. Holmes is fifth in the NE10 in free throw percentage, sixth in scoring and tied for ninth in made threes per game (2.4), while standing fifth in the NCAA East Region in free throw shooting and ninth in scoring. With 1,488 career points, Holmes is the program's 14th-leading all-time scorer, and he recently matched Saint Michael's legend Mark Fizulich '97 for fourth with 229 three-pointers.
The Purple Knights, 4-7 overall and 1-6 in NE10 play, visit regionally-ranked Daemen (N.Y.) College on Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. The Wildcats are fourth in this week's D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.
