Gaskins claims first career accolade, lands on NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's basketball senior Morrell Gaskins (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 7. It was the first accolade of Gaskins' career.

Gaskins averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds during a 1-1 week, shooting 66.7 percent from the field and 73.3 percent on free throws (11-for-15). He added 4.5 offensive rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 block during 37.0 minutes per contest. In a 74-71 overtime victory at Merrimack College on Wednesday, Gaskins collected 11 points, six boards, a block and a steal while shooting 5-of-10. During the Purple Knights' nationally-televised 70-65 loss at regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, he posted career highs of 28 points, 13 rebounds, six offensive boards and 10 free throws while matching his best with three assists. Gaskins shot 9-of-11 while heading to the free throw line on 14 occasions. He also rejected a shot.

As a senior, Gaskins has found a significant role in the lineup for the first time, starting every game while averaging 10.9 points on 55.6 percent shooting with 6.3 rebounds and a team-high 19 blocks. All of those figures, as well as eight steals, are career highs after he averaged 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 7.8 minutes during his first 56 college games. Gaskins is fifth in the NE-10 in shooting, sixth in offensive rebounding and 11th in blocks per game.

Saint Michael's is 5-16 overall and 3-13 in the league heading into its next contest, a home game against Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
