MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team fell at No. 22 Saint Anselm College, 101-69, on Tuesday evening during Northeast-10 Conference play in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Purple Knights are 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the league, while the Hawks improved to 5-0 and 3-0.
The contest was a rematch of a 2015 NE-10 Championship semifinal. Saint Anselm, whose ranking is according to the D2SIDA National Media Poll and which is also receiving votes toward the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) national poll, finished as last year's NE-10 Championship runner-up and qualified for the past three NCAA Tournaments. The Hawks are second in the D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.
Senior Morrell Gaskins (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) put together his first career double-double for the Purple Knights, notching 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with a career-high 10 rebounds. First-year Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) also scored 13 points during his initial collegiate start, shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range, and sophomore Colin Richey (Upton, Mass./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched a career-high 12 points while handing out three assists.
Junior Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) also posted a double-double, his fourth of the season, with 10 points and 10 rebounds, including six offensive. Classmate Zaire Williams (Paterson, N.J./Newark Academy) dished off five assists, and senior Greg Grippo (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prep) knocked down a pair of threes, tying Monroe Blakes '92 M'93 for 14th in school history with 124 triples for his career.
Saint Anselm scored 60 of its points from beyond the arc, shooting 20-of-38 from downtown while also shooting 54.7 percent overall. Senior Mike McCahey led the way with 23 points and four assists, while first-year Tim Guers added 19 points, with both going 5-for-7 from deep. Junior Harrison Taggart scored 15 points, senior Victor Joshua notched 11 points with seven assists, and first-year Cody Ball added 10 points and six helpers.
McCahey opened the game with a triple before the Purple Knights notched the next seven points, as Bonds and Gaskins both converted lay-ups off Williams passes before Bonds kicked to Holmes for a trey just 1:30 into the contest. However, Ball and Joshua canned long-range shots 35 seconds apart to give the Hawks a 9-7 advantage, the final lead swing of the game. Gaskins made one freebie at 16:53 to draw Saint Michael's within one, and Holmes countered McCahey's jumper with one of his own to keep it an 11-10 game.
Guers hit a three at 16:11 before Gaskins put home a lay-in off of Grippo's feed, and the visitors were down 14-12. Three Hawks had three-point possessions during a 1:28 span to account for a 9-0 run, and Taggart's three-point play allowed Saint Anselm to extend its lead to 26-14 at 11:24. Four Purple Knights scored during a 9-3 response, with junior David Sullivan's (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) lay-in at 5:47 bringing Saint Michael's within 29-23, but the Hawks countered with a 31-9 run that bridged halftime.
Saint Michael's returns home next Wednesday to take on regionally-ranked Merrimack College at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors are seventh in the latest D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.
