COLCHESTER, Vt. - Current members and alumni from the Saint Michael's College men's golf team have remained active in competition this summer, including as rising junior Matt Johnson (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) was among more than 150 qualifiers for the 89th New England Amateur Championship last week.
Johnson carded a 73 in the opening round on July 17 at Portland Country Club in Falmouth, Maine, before shooting a 74 on Day 2, finishing with 147 strokes for the tournament and missing the cut for the final round by two shots. Johnson qualified for the New England Amateur Championship by virtue of shooting a par 72 at Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton, Mass., on June 25 during a regional qualifier. That was one of many strong performances he has recorded in his home state this summer. On June 7, Johnson carded a 74 during a Massachusetts Amateur Championship qualifier at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Amherst to earn a spot in the state meet as an alternate. There, he notched two more 74s - on different courses each day - to finish at 148 on July 9-10 to miss the cut for the Round of 32 by four strokes.
Johnson joined rising senior Tucker Buteau (Gorham, Maine/Tilton School) and rising sophomore Connor Morse (Westford, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) among more than 100 golfers on course for the Worcester County Amateur Championship on June 30 and July 1. Johnson tied for second, with his 3-under 72-69--141 performance bringing him within one shot of the winner. Buteau carded a 79-79--158 while Morse rallied to end at 85-78--163.
Buteau put together a round of 78 on June 14 at Biddeford-Saco Country Club to qualify for the Maine Amateur Championship at Belgrade Lakes Country Club on July 10-11, when he notched a two-day 84-84--168 to miss the cut for the third round. Rising senior David Boardman (Pelham, N.H./Pelham) shot 82 on June 24 at Bretwood Country Club to miss qualifying for the New Hampshire Amateur Championship by just one stroke.
Lefty Corey Carlos '14 (Essex, Vt./Essex) fired a 78 on July 2 at Champlain Country Club to earn a spot in the Vermont Amateur Championship on July 10-11, where he ultimately missed the cut for the third round following a 91-97--188 performance. That meet was held at the Country Club of Vermont in Waterbury, the site of the Saint Michael's Department of Athletics' annual Purple Knights Golf Classic.
