COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College field hockey seniors Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) and Katie Leonard (Carmel, N.Y./The Ursuline School) both landed on the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, Sept. 23. It was the second accolade of Johnston's career and the first for Leonard.
Johnston scored four goals on six shots during the Purple Knights' 5-0 win over the University of New Haven on Saturday, tallying twice in the opening 4:18 before also scoring in the 39th and 44th minutes. Johnston became the first Saint Michael's player to net four goals since Andrea Slaven '09 on Sept. 18, 2007, while coming within one of a school record. The team's second-leading goal scorer a year ago with a career-high six, Johnston's first four goals of the year tie her for seventh in the NE10, and she is tied for ninth in points (8). She is in her second year as a starter following a part-time starting role as a sophomore, her first season as a regular in the lineup.
Leonard handed out three assists at New Haven, including aiding Johnston on the first two goals of the game, in the third and fifth minutes. Leonard tacked on another helper in the 44th minute and, from her position in the midfield, helped the Purple Knights allow only eight shots en route to the shutout. Leonard, who entered the contest with one assist in 51 career games, became the first Purple and Gold player with three helpers in a game since Kari Surace '03 on Oct. 13, 2001. She was within one of a 22-year-old program mark, and is now tied for fifth in the NE10 this fall. Leonard has been a regular since her rookie year, with 49 of 52 appearances as a starter.
Now 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the NE10, with two losses coming by one goal, Saint Michael's hosts LIU Post on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Pioneers won the last two NE10 Championships and qualified for four of the last five NCAA Tournaments.
