Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Assumption Behind Farris' Seven Shutout Innings

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) worked seven shutout innings, and classmate Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) had his second game-winning RBI of the weekend to help the Saint Michael's College baseball team down Assumption College, 2-1, on Sunday at Rocheleau Field. The Purple Knights, now 9-27 overall and 4-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference, finished off the three-game series sweep after claiming 4-3 and 11-9 decisions on Saturday. The Greyhounds are 17-25-1 and 11-13-1.

Farris' seven shutout frames marked the longest scoreless outing of his career, as he scattered five hits - all singles - while striking out two and walking two. The victory, which moved him to 3-2 this season, came less than 24 hours after he picked up the save in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. First-year Danté Moran (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Dixie Hollins) was 2-for-3 with a run and a hit-by-pitch, extending his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest since the Purple Knights returned to the NE10 in 2012.

Robertson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a hit-by-pitch, first-year Iset Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) doubled and walked, and classmate Holden Jackman (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) scored and doubled. Junior Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) had a triple and an RBI while earning his school-record-tying third save of the season - and second in two days - by striking out one during a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Mike Thomas '99, in 1998, and Rob McCarty '13, in 2010 and 2011, also saved three games in a season.

Senior Andrew Jaehnig was 2-for-4 with a run for Assumption, and classmate Jake Byrne finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. First-year James McNamara took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Moran and Robertson both singled with one out in a scoreless first inning, and senior Quinn Moynihan led off the Assumption half with a single but was later cut down stealing by catcher Jackman. Beyond Moynihan, Farris allowed only one other Greyhound to reach base in the first four innings.

With two out in the third, Allen tripled to drive home Moran for the game's first run, and Farris escaped a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the fifth by inducing an inning-ending grounder to Allen at first base. With runners at second and third and one down in the sixth, Farris fanned the next batter and got the final batter to line out to first-year left fielder Cameron Kroeger (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside).

Jackman led off the seventh with a double before Maldonado walked, and Moran and Robertson were both plunked with two down to force in Jackman with the eventual winning run. With Farris out of the game, Assumption picked up three of its eight hits in the game during the eighth inning alone, all consecutively with two down, as Byrne singled through the right side to score Jaehnig and make it 2-1. However, the final batter flew out to Robertson in center field, and Allen entered the game to produce a strikeout and two fly ball outs in the ninth.

The Purple Knights are back in action at regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader, during which Saint Michael's will play the home team in the nightcap. The opener will be carried live on FOX College Sports. Find the channel in your market here. The Penmen were second in this past week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll.
